Learning Series Free Events

The Madison Parks Foundation supports the Learning Series to provide free, year-round programs and equipment that let everyone—regardless of income—learn new activities, connect, and enjoy our parks.

The Learning Series, supported by the Madison Parks Foundation, brings our parks to life with free, hands-on activities and educational experiences for all ages. These programs are designed to connect people to nature, spark curiosity, and build community—making Madison’s parks more welcoming and inclusive for everyone.

Learning, Connection, and Fun for All

The Learning Series features educational events, guided workshops, and storytelling experiences that celebrate the people, projects, and natural wonders found throughout our parks. Led by knowledgeable instructors and local experts (supported through MPF stipends), these activities invite participants to:

  • Learn a new skill or outdoor activity

  • Experience nature up close

  • Spend quality time with family and friends

  • Discover hidden corners of Madison’s parks

Year-Round Activities

Programs are offered year-round and have included a wide variety of unique experiences such as:

  • Star gazing and candle-lit snowshoeing

  • Learn to log roll and geo-caching adventures

  • Snow snaking demonstrations with the Ho-Chunk Nation

  • Learn to stand-up paddle board or cross-country ski

  • Bird watching sessions and owl-listening walks

  • Learn Curling and Cold-Weather Camping workshops

Filling the Recreation Gap

Madison’s Parks Division is one of the few in the country without a recreation department—so MPF proudly fills that gap. The Foundation funds and supports free programming that removes barriers to participation, ensuring everyone can engage in outdoor learning regardless of income or experience.

Expanding Access Through Community Support

Thanks to donations and grants, MPF has been able to purchase equipment that expands these opportunities to even more residents, including:

  • 30 Skate Helpers for ice skating lessons

  • 20 pairs of binoculars for bird watching and nature sessions

  • 40 birdhouse-building kits

  • 40 snowshoes for winter exploration

  • 75 kites and additional materials for family learning events

Support Free Guided Activities in Our Parks

Your support keeps these experiences free and accessible—allowing more people to learn, connect, and enjoy Madison’s parks through activities like bird watching, star gazing, disc golf, and more. Together, we’re building a community where everyone has the chance to learn and play outdoors.

Your donation supports programs and initiatives like this one that ensure every Madison park is a place where everyone belongs.
