Board Mission Statement News
Madison is a giving community filled with wonderful and generous citizens with a love of our Parks. The Madison Parks Foundation (MPF) relies on strong partnerships to keep vibrant the many jewels that make up the vast Madison parks' system, and the MPF Board of Directors is extremely thankful for the generosity of many individuals and businesses.
The Foundation is honored to include among our donors the following people, organizations and businesses.
Brothers Robert and Irwin Goodman, were very good friends to the MPF. Prior to their passing, the long-time Madison jewelers and philanthropists made many donations, including $100,000 for the swim scholarship fund administered by the MPF. Since its inception the fund has helped hundreds of adults, and a couple of thousand children learn to swim or just enjoy the water. Lessons are held at the city's first public pool; a pool named for the Goodman brothers after they laid down $2.8 million in seed money to make the popular facility a reality.
The MPF would also like to recognize other important contributors who have "jumped in" to help bolster the swim scholarship program: Alliant Energy, the Shelley Glover Sport Education Foundation (it was set up by the local skier's family and friends following her death in a United States Ski Team training accident several years ago), and the Madison Mallards Baseball Team. The Mallards help host the Remarkable Rubber Duck Race, an annual Tenney Park children's classic from which all proceeds go to the swim fund.
The MPF also teams up with Madison City Parks staff for special community events like Ride The Drive which turns downtown streets over to bikes, roller blades, and other non-motorized modes of travel. Pepsi of Madison and Madison Gas & Electric (MG&E) have both joined forces with the MPF to help make this family favorite a tremendous success.
Each year, the MPF and City of Madison Parks honor the many, many volunteers who tackle projects and pitch-in to help make our neighborhood parks sparkle. The good folks at MG&E, J.H Findorff & Son Inc., and Michael Best & Friedrich have provided financial backing for these celebrations, as have individuals like Candy and George Gialamas. We think it is important to properly recognize those who give of their time and energy particularly at a time when tax dollars earmarked for our parks are limited.
We are also indebted to individuals like W. Jerome Frautschi who contribute to our unrestricted fund, which enables us to finance those good park projects for which there are not public funds.
Getting the word out about the MPF's mission is also important as we look to raise awareness and resources. Adams Outdoor Advertising has been more than kind in helping us accomplish our outreach efforts.
